Full Itinerary
Day 1: Arequipa – Majes Valley – Cotahuasi
We depart Arequipa towards the Majes River Valley, a fertile oasis famous for its shrimps and Pisco. We pass through rice fields and the towns of Corire and Chuquibamba. After lunch, we enjoy views of the Coropuna snow-peak (6330m) and visit Pallarcocha Lagoon to see vicuñas and ancient Yareta plants. We descend into the precious Cotahuasi Valley, arriving around 5:00 p.m.
Day 2: Taurisma – Tomepampa – Alca – Luicho Hot Springs
After breakfast, we explore the narrow streets and lime-whitened houses of Cotahuasi. We visit the Matriz Church and hike to Taurisma to see its colonial church and cross a suspended bridge. We then continue to Tomepampa to visit a honey factory. After lunch in Alca, we visit the Luicho medicinal hot springs (33-38°C) before returning to Cotahuasi for the night.
Day 3: Sipia Waterfalls
We travel by bus to the canyon and then continue on foot with the help of packhorses. After a 2-hour hike through narrow paths, we reach the majestic Sipia Waterfalls, where the river narrows to 5 meters and drops 150 meters into the rocks, often creating rainbows. We enjoy a picnic at the bottom of the canyon before returning to Cotahuasi.
Day 4: Maje Castle – Toro Muerto Petroglyphs – Arequipa
We begin our return trip to Arequipa. On the way, we visit “Castillo de Maje,” a strange rock formation shrouded in local myths. We also explore the Toro Muerto petroglyphs, a 5km² area of volcanic rock featuring over 1,000-year-old engravings from the Wari and Chuquibamba cultures. We arrive back in Arequipa in the late afternoon.
